"Resilience Unveiled: A Male Student's Journey Through Heartbreak and Healing"

Hi, my name is Lakshan Paranathala. I have been privileged to share my story on the invisible battles I faced with the man in the mirror. I once believed that a young adult like me was too resilient to be affected by mental health problems and was arrogant to believe it was more than an excuse individuals manifested to cover up from there lack of effort and mental strength. But I was humbled by the universe as it showed me its true capacity to challenge me, in which I was brought to my knees and pushed to dark corners of my mind.   My story like many other begins with a boy who fell for a girl for the first time and got his heart broken. It was my first time, to ever have felt such emotions but being brought up in a South Asian household, we never discussed mental health and how to deal with it. Therefore, I didn’t know who to go to, so I spent countless hours going on walks by myself and listening to sad music all night as I was a prisoner of my mind. The effects of the pandemic meant that I was unable to distract myself and I had never learnt the tools of how to handle a breakup. Because for me, Love was just lyrics locked in the verses of a song and an idea that was portrayed in media.  During this break-up I was in the first year of my Biomedical Science degree and was not enthusiastic about the curriculum and didn’t know what I wanted to do in my life. I knew I had a love for medicine and considered dropping out to go pursue this passion abroad. The loss of a person you considered to have a future with, and the uncertainty of my career made me feel like a leaf being blown by furious winds.   However, now I can happily say that I have found my passion as a post-graduate medical student. I am with my amazing girlfriend who I love. I am building a successful basketball social media page with my brother (btw we have been so lucky to work with Nike and NBA), and I am happier than I ever was.

BE AROUND PEOPLE
WHO KNOW YOUR WORTH

So here are my top secrets to how I went from having thoughts that should’ve never entered my mind to now!

1.     Having a good support network was essential in my climb as we are only as strong as the people we have around us. My family and friends showed me unconditional love and extreme amounts of efforts to instil confidence in me that I would figure it all out.

2.     Being vulnerable is a superpower!  As humans the most common thing we have is our ability to feel emotions. We may express it differently, but we shouldn’t suffer in silence but learn to express it in a healthy manner. It can be scary to do it at first, so I journaled it.

3.     Fake it till you make it. I strongly believe attitude can manifest a lot of things so it’s a simple change in perspective that made the process easier.

4.     Faith. Believing in religion was something that allowed me to understand detachment and enabled me to discover the journey of self-awareness!

I don’t want to overwhelm you with it all! But whoever is reading this, please remember you are worth it and that there will be brighter days to come. Lot of love Lakshan.
